Fosamax Found to Cause Femur Fractures

Fosamax (a bisphosphonate drug) is a prescription drug used to treat post-menopausal women who are at risk of osteoporosis.  Merck, the manufacturer of Fosamax, has performed clinical trials on some 8,000 patients pre-marketing and reported that patient bone turnover rate returns to normal and bone density increases.  They also report that there is a decrease in spine, wrist and hip fractures while on Fosamax therapy.  However, post-marketing reports indicate that there is an increase in Fosamax Femur Fractures with long-term Fosamax therapy.  Merck has been plagued with Fosamax side effects since this osteoporotic drug went on the market.

Reports from the Hospital for Special Surgery and Columbia University Medical Center have indicated that Fosamax changes bone remodeling in an unknown manner and may contribute to Fosamax Femur Fractures.  These Fosamax Fractures are reported to be spontaneous and without any real trauma at the time the insult occured.  Healthcare providers in hospitals and private practice published more information on Fosamax Femur Fractures in the New England Journal as well as in individual reports.  All these physicians have reported unusual transverse Fosamax Fractures with a beak projection of cortical bone with irregular bone density along the femoral shaft as seen by X-ray film.  This kind of break is extremely rare but may be seen with car accident victims or someone who has fallen down a flight of stairs where you have a strong horizontal force on the femur.  Recall that the strongest bone in the body is the femur and requires a great force to break it under normal conditions.     

Merck’s patent for Fosamax ran out in 2008 and at that time the FDA approved generic versions such as Boniva, Actonel and Reclast.  These generics have also demonstrated Fosamax Femur Fractures so you should take caution when switching over to the generic drug. 

Fosomax Causes  Brittle Bones

It is interesting that the medical community doesn’t agree on the definition for bone density and this has been some concern with the interpreting of clinical data.  It has been demonstrated that there is a difference between bone quantity and bone quality with long-term use of Fosamax.  It has been reported that patients who had been treated with bisphosphonates showed a reduction in tissue heterogeneity, specifically with mineral content (higher calcium concentration) and crystal size as compared to control groups.  This suggests that Fosamax is generating a more brittle bone that is easier to break.  This generates a difference in bone quality and this may contribute to these unusual Fosamax Femur Fractures.  There also appears to be less collagen in the matrix.  Collagen is a protein that gives bone resiliency.  Resiliency refers to bones ability to bend and flex with a load on it.  Less collagen gives bone less flexibility.  This also contributes to bones brittleness again contributing to Fosamax Fractures.
