Fosamax Linked to Throat Cancer?
An new study was published in the June Journal of the American Medical Association indicated a 100% increase in Throat Cancer for those who have taken fosamax or related bisphosphonate drugs . In the newly released study, British researchers looked at nearly 3,000 patients with throat cancer and found a high correlation to Fosamax Throat cancer.
Normally, the risk of developing throat cancer in patients in 60 to 79 years old is only 1 in 1,000, but Researchers say after using the drugs for about five years, the risk is double. Experts are not sure, at this time why the drugs might lead to Fosama throat cancer, but that Fosamax can cause inflammation in the esophagus, which could make cancer more likely. The researchers stopped short of concluding that the Fosamax or other bisphoshonate drugs contributes to esophageal cancer, noting that they could not rule out the possibility that unknown causes and factors that are linked to prolonged use of bisphosphonates might also increase the risk of Fosamax throat cancer.
An FDA an advisory panel meeting is scheduled for September to discuss the long-term safety of drugs such as Fosamax which is used to treat osteoporosis for evidence they cause throat cancer and say patients should still take the drugs.
More than 40 million people in the U.S. either have osteoporosis or are at high risk because of insufficient bone mass, according to the National Institutes of Health.
