FDA Issues Chantix Warning

Early in 2008, the FDA issued a  Chantix warning to physicians and patients who use Chantix saying that Chantix  side effects  neuropsychiatric. Pfizer was instructed to place safety information on all Chantix packaging.  In mid 2009, the FDA required Pfizer to place a 'Black Box' warining on Chantix warning the public about depression, hostility and suicidal thoughts.  The FDA had received 227 reports of suicidal acts including 28 suicides; 397 cases of psychosis; 525 reports of acts of aggression.  These reports prompted the Federal Aviation Adminstration (FAA) to issue a ban on the use of Chantix by pilots and air traffic controllers.

The FDA Chantix Warning  advisers users to contact their healthcare provider if they experience any changes in behavior as soon as possible to prevent any repercussions.

Chantix does not contain nicotine.  Therefore, some individuals may experience nicotine withdrawal while using this drug.  This is not true for everyone.  After all you can continue to smoke for up to one week once your therapy starts helping you to ease into the program.  Make sure to talk with your healthcare provider to see if Chantix is right for you as there are other alternatives.  Make sure you report any Chantix side effects you experience.  You should be monitored by your doctor to make sure you are okay.

The FDA has approved Chantix for a twelve week therapy.  Chantix can be continued for another twelve weeks if necessary.  This medication should not be used in females under the age of eighteen, women who are pregnant or will become pregnant.

  • Fever
  • Sleeplessness
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Skin rash
  • Blistering
  • Peeling
  • Depression
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Suicide
