DePuy Hip Replacements Linked to Muscle Damage

DePuy Orthopedics has issued a DePuy Hip Recall for two of their hip implant devices due to a higher than normal failure rate.  The DePuy Hip Recall was issued in August of 2010.  The DePuy Hip Replacement systems that have been recalled include the ASR XL Acetabular Cup System and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System.

A study performed by Oxford University in England has reported that the DePuy metal-on-metal hip implant may cause severe inflammation that may damage bone, muscle, tendons and other soft tissue.  This university study reported that 3.4 percent of their patients with a DePuy Hip Replacement demonstrated tissue masses in and around the hip joint.  These researchers have estimated that about 1% of all DePuy Hip Replacement patients will experience soft tissue damage due to inflammation.  Researchers also found metal fragments that had broken off from the prosthesis that can enter the bloodstream generating muscle and nerve damage.

The DePuy ASR XL Acetabular Cup System and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System have been associated with metallosis.  Metallosis is caused by metal-on-metal rubbing of the joint.  This rubbing creates friction within the joint that generates chromium and cobalt metallic particles to be released.  These metallic fragments can gain access to the blood system as well as neighboring tissue and cause metallic poisoning.

Current data suggests that 1 in 8 DePuy Hip Replacement patients will need to have revision surgery done within five years of the initial hip implant necessitating a DePuy Hip Recall.  In general, hip replacements have been reported to last for fifteen to twenty years and in some cases thirty years.  To date,  around 93,000 patients have received hip implants with the DePuy ASR systems.

Common side effects

Common adverse side effects associated with DePuy Hip Replacement ASR systems include severe pain, inflammation, metallosis, difficulty walking, dislodging of the implant, implant breaking and bone fracture.  Physicians have reported that these ASR hip systems have a faulty design in that the cup is too shallow and dosen't provide for a good fit.

This DePuy Hip Recall has brought about a number of DePuy Recall lawsuits around the United States.  It is a good idea to contact a DePuy Hip lawyer for a consultation and find out what your rights are.  A DePuy Hip lawyer is well informated about the DePuy Hip Recall and can properly inform you about your rights and provide information you need to ask your doctor about.
