DePuy ASR Hip Implants Recalled
DePuy Orthopaedics has issued a “Hip Implant Recall” for two of their devices that include the DePuy ASR Hip Implant System and the ASR XL Acetabular Cup System. New reports indicate that one hundred thousand people may be effected by this product recall and that as many as one in eight patients will be forced to undergo a second hip surgery (revision surgery)within five years of their first Hip implant surgery. In general hip replacements last from 12 to 15 years and in some cases thirty years with good quality materials but the ASR Hip implants are being found to fail early and require replacement.
DePuy had been attributing these hip implant failures to surgeons not following the instructions on proper insertion. Not only has DePuy blamed surgeons for their ASR device failure but have also blamed patients in their care of the Deouy Hip replacement. DePuy said that patients may have been careless with their new implants contributing to a further increase in failure rates. Now the data seemd to show shows it not the Surgeons or the patients but a falty product and now there are thousands of DePuy ASR Hip replacement users that may very well need a another operstion to remove the Hip Implant..
Some orthopedic surgeons believe the cause of the problem is that the ASR cup has a shallower design than other hip replacement systems. The failure mechanism is that the parts of the Dupuy Hip replacement come loose, fracturing the implant and causing tumors and resulting in pain.
