Avandia Heart Attack
Avandia is an anti-diabetic drug related to thiazolidnedione drugs that are prescribed to patients who have adult type-2 diabetes. Type-2 diabetes is known as the noninsulin-dependent diabetes. Avandia helps to restore your body’s proper response to insulin hence lowering your blood sugar. This is very important in that consistent high blood sugar will cause kidney damage, blindness, nerve damage, loss of limbs, heart attack, stroke and sexual dysfunction. Avandia is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and has been linked to a number of severe side effects including an Avandia Heart Attack. If you have experienced a heart attack while on Avandia you might want to contact an Avandia attorney to see if you qualify for an Avandia lawsuit.
Reports of Avandia side effects have been pouring in since the year 2007. Avandia is GSK’s top selling diabetic drug but it has come under close scrutiny. In May of 2007 the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) published analysis of several articles on patients taking Avandia. Their review of the Avandia literature demonstrated a significant increase in the risk of Avandia Heart Attack and other heart problems that raised concerns that heart attacks and Avandia are linked. If you have experienced an Avandia Heart Attack or any other side effect you should contact an Avandia attorney and see if you qualify for an Avandia Lawsuit.
FDA Avandia Warning
The report from NEJM report alarmed the FDA so the agency released an Avandia alert. The FDA announced the results of the study but also stated that the results of the long-term clinical trials done by GSK contradicted the results of the NEJM analysis. At this point the FDA was concerned but did not recommend that doctors take their patients off Avandia at this time but made promise to investigate the problem further. The FDA also announced that the agency would present the issue of Avandia’s Heart Attack potential and the need for more Avandia Warnings and any other action that needed to be taken. The FDA eventually required a “black box” warning to inform consumers and physicians of the possible risk of coronary problems in patients taking Avandia. Have you suffered from Avandia injuries such as an Avandia Heart Attack? You may qualify for an Avandia Lawsuit.
This MEJM report definitely raises questions about the FDA’s approval of Avandia to begin with. One would question the current regulatory pathways for the development of drugs to treat diabetes or any other drug. The FDA questions the experimental design to show validity of Avandia’s ability to aid in type-2 diabetes.
Members of Congress have also expressed alarm about the FDA’s handling of Avandia. Both houses of Congress have debated funding bills for the FDA that contains certain requirements for reform of the methods used by the FDA to monitor drug safety. Congress has vowed to continue investigation as to whether GSK revealed the dangers of Avandia side effects to the public. More studies in 2007 have raised further question about Avandia side effects. Reports came across that demonstrated that Avandia increased the risk of fractures in the upper arm, hand and foot. Given that millions of consumers are taking Avandia, bone deteriorization could have a serious impact on health issues as well as health insurance.
At that point the FDA required GSK to prepare and release a new medication guide for Avandia. This was released in February 2008. This new guide contains all the Avandia Warnings about bone fractures and Avandia Heart Attack.
