DePuy Hip Warning Announced
The Orthopaedic subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson, DePuy, has recalled two of its hip replacement systems in August of 2010 due to many reports of high failure rates because of design flaws with these devices. These two metal-on-metal hip replacement systems include the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular system and the DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing system. This DePuy Hip Recall has not come too soon. It has been estimated that over 10,000 hip implant patients may be affected by this DePuy Hip Recall.
Reports of DePuy hip replacement injuries have been reported to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for quite some time. The FDA has reported over 500 complaints from patients who have received the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular system or the DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing system. It was reported that these devices needed to be replaced within the first or second year after surgery in a number of cases. This was an alarming rate of failure which necessitated a DePuy Hip Recall.
Before the DePuy hip Recall, the FDA issued a DePuy Hip Warning letter saying that metal debris could easily be generated within the rotating section of the hip implant and then enters blood circulation increasing the amount of heavy metal toxicity in the body. The metal particles could result in poisoning. This DePuy Hip Warning also pointed out that the DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing platform had a poor revision surgery rating.
The DePuy metal-on-metal hip replacement systems account for one out of three hip replacements done in the US. There are roughly over 65,000 metal-on-metal hip replacements done every year. This puts a lot of people at risk with cobalt and chromium ball and socket implants that release metal debris into their blood system. Patients who are at greater risk include those who have implants that were poorly positioned, are female or those who have a weakened bone condition. The poor design and choice of materials for this product have caused many patients to undergo a second hip replacement surgery and grounds for a DePuy Hip Recall.
