DePuy Hip replacement Recall
DePuy Orthopaedics, a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson, DePuy has issued a “Hip Replacement Recall” for two of their devices that include the DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System and the ASR XL Acetabular Cup System. Reports have indicated that this may effects one hundred thousand people and that as many as one in eight patients will be forced to undergo a second hip implant surgery (revision surgery) due to the medical devices issues within five years of their first Depuy Hip implant surgery. In general hip replacements last from 12 to 15 years and in some cases thirty years with good quality materials.
In the past DePuy has attributed these hip implant failures to surgeons not following the detailed instructions on proper insertion of the Depuy Hip replacement implant.. Not only has DePuy blamed surgeons for their ASR device failure but have also blamed patients in their care of the Deouy Hip replacement . DePuy Orthopaedics claimed that patients may have been careless with their new implants contributing to a further increase in failure rates. To date, there are thousands of DePuy Hip replacement users that may need a second surgery.
Some orthopedic surgeons believe that the Depuy Hip replacement design is the reason for a high failure rate. The ASR cup has a shallower design than other hip replacement systems that may be contributing to a higher failure rate. The failure mechanism of the device the device is that the components of the Dupuy Hip replacement come loose, fracturing the implant and causing Tumors and resulting in pain.
